The Virginia field hockey team notched a 2-0 shutout of New Hampshire as Devon Burnley and Amy Desjadon combined for seven saves and Taylor Swezey and Inge Kaars Sijpesteijn scored to lead the Cavaliers. Virginia (2-2) outshot New Hampshire 16-11 in defeating the Wildcats.
Virginia got on the board first as Abby Taylor took the ball up the right side of the pitch and shot; her attempt was tipped into the cage by Swezey, who scored her second goal of the season to put the Hoos up 1-0 in the 28th minute of play. The Cavaliers did not allow the Wildcats a short corner and gave up only two shots.
In the second half of play both teams attempted nine shots and the Wildcats drew four short corners to the Cavaliers’ two, but Desjadon turned away five of them to preserve the shutout. With time winding down, Traci Ragukas attempted a shot, but her stick was obstructed, gaining a penalty stroke for the Cavaliers with two seconds left in regulation. All-American Kaars Sijpesteijn deposited the ball in the net for a 2-0 lead as the No. 8 Cavaliers notched their first shutout of the young season.
Virginia returns to action tomorrow as the Cavaliers face the host Catamounts in a contest starting at 12:30.
