Men Finish Unbeaten in State College

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Virginia men’s swimming and diving edged Penn State (183.5-169.5) and defeated Michigan State (233.5-117.5) Saturday in University Park, Pa. The women notched a 2-1 record at the quad meet, downing Michigan State (262.5-90.5) and Purdue (238-115) but falling to the host Nittany Lions (218-134).

The win improves the men’s record to 4-1 overall while the women are now 4-2 in dual meets this season.

Rookie Taylor Smith clocked a first-place finish in the 1000 free, finishing in a time of 9:17.80. Teammate Darren Ankosko finished second (9:19.10) behind Smith in the event. Ankosko went on to win the 400 IM in 4:00.09 and was followed by Tim Hayes (4:02.23) and Ian Vogt (4:02.67).

Scot Robison won the 100 fly in a time of 49.70 and teammate Lee Roberston was second with a mark of 49.80. John Azar won the 200 breast in 2:03.70 and teammate PJ Sullivan placed second with a time of 2:04.31.

Bryan Stahl and Tony Colella were second (50.50) and third (50.99), respectively, in the 100 back. Matt McLean posted a second-place finish in the 200 free (1:39.98).

The Cavalier men (Bryan Stahl, Sullivan, Robertson, Robison) earned a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay, clocking a time of 1:31.85. Virginia also finished second in the 400 free relay, with the team of McLean, Robison, Azar and Robertson clocking a time of 3:03.48.

Alex D’Ambrosio led Virginia on the boards with a fifth-place finish on the 3-meter.

Jenn Narum led the Cavalier women with a first-place finish in the 1000 free, earning the win in a time of 9:56.65. Lewis also clocked a win in the 500 free with a mark of 23.47. Teammate Amber Bialas was second in the event (23.63).

Mei Christensen was second in the 100 back (56.66) while Ellie Freeman recorded a second-place finish (2:19.11) in the 200 breast. Liz Shaw (56.29) and Stephanie Glover (56.41) finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 fly.

Claire Crippen was second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:18.25, followed by Shaw, who finished in 4:20.88.

Virginia placed second in the 200 medley relay (Christensen, Freeman, Glover, Lewis) with a time of 1:44.48. The Cavaliers went on to place second and third in the 400 free relay, clocking times of 3:25.25 and 3:31.25, respectively.

The Virginia men are back in action at 2 p.m. Thursday against Tennessee at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The Cavalier women have a break until Nov. 30, when the squad will compete in the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga.
