CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Duke and Gardner Webb Saturday in Durham, N.C. Both teams won eight events apiece.

The men defeated Duke 113-91 and Gardner Webb by a score of 121-90. The women knocked off the Blue Devils 135-104 and the Bulldogs 121-89.

The women’s 200-yard medley relay team got things started. Stephanie Glover, Katherine McDonnell, Kristen Wallace and Amber Bialas pulled together to claim the first event of the meet in a time of 1:45.60.

The women were 1-2-3 in the 500 free, with second-year Jen Narum leading the way with a winning time of 4:52.10. Rookies Claire Galdun and Clarie Crippen placed second and third, respectively.

Freshmen Jenna Harris and Kristen Moores led the Cavaliers in the 100 free. Harris won the race in 52.42 while Moores was close behind, clocking a time of 52.75.

Crippen won the 200 IM in 2:05.43 and Liz Shaw was first in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 55.80. Glover also earned first-place honors in the 100 back with a time of 57.87 and Ellie Freeman won the 100 breast in 1:04.67.

Both the men and women had 1-2-3 finishes in the 50 freestyle event. The women were led by Bialas, who clocked a winning time of 24.01. Kristen Moores finished second and Nancy Baar was third. Matt McLean paced the men, placing first in 21.28. John Azar finished second and Lee Robertson was third.

The Cavaliers also finished 1-2-3 in the 200 free. Rookie Scot Robison won the race, swimming a time of 1:40.22. Teammates Darren Ankosko and Taylor Smith were close behind in second and third, respectively.

Daniel McMahon and Bjorn Falk led the way in the 100 butterfly. McMahon won the race in 51.12 while Falk was second with a time of 52.59.

Charlottesville native Jake Shrum won the 500 free with a time of 4:49.56. John Snawerdt won the 1650 free in 15:59.37 and teammate Pat Reams claimed the 200 IM with a mark of 1:54.03.

Second-year Nathan Parker was victorious on both the one and three-meter boards for the Cavaliers. He posted a mark of 231.60 on the one-meter and scored 288.07 on the three-meter.

Virginia will compete against North Carolina Sunday in Chapel Hill, N.C. The men will begin at noon while the women will have a 3 p.m. start.
