CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Virginia Tech in the team’s first home meet of the season Wednesday at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The women earned a 188-110 win while the men defeated the Hokies 189-108.

Liz Shaw broke the AFC pool record in the 200 fly, touching in a time of 1:57.54, an NCAA B mark. The previous record was 1:59.03 set by Cara Lane in 2001. The Cavaliers went 1-2-3 in the event, with classmate Claire Crippen (2:00.84) finishing second and newcomer Joanna Thomas (2:03.75) third.

"Liz set the pool record last week at Clemson with a really good swim at almost an identical time to the one she just set here," head coach Mark Bernardino said. "She is incredibly gifted, very focused and very hungry to be excellent."

The Cavalier women also went 1-2-3 four other events. In the 1650 free, Jen Narum also reached an NCAA B standard with a time of 16:28.20. Thomas placed second (16:45.97) and Claire Galdun was third (16:53.33). Mei Christensen won the 100 back (54.24, B) with first-years Lauren Smart (55.52) and Jenny Lewis (56.17) finishing second and third, respectively. Christensen went on to win the 200 back, touching at 1:57.29, another NCAA B time.

Ellie Freeman claimed first-place honors in the 200 breast (2:16.23) followed by teammates Katherine McDonnell (2:16.59) and Crippen (2:20.91). The 500 free was won by Narum in 4:51.02, followed closely by Jenna Harris (4:51.33) and Leslie Swinley (4:57.18).

Other event winners for the Virginia women were Megan Evo in the 200 free (1:49. 72), McDonnell in the 100 breast (1:03.13), Meredith Perdue in the 50 free (24.01), Shaw in the 100 fly (54.44) and the 200 medley relay team of Christensen, McDonnell, Shaw and Evo (1:41.95).

Pat Reams paced the trio of Cavalier men who went 1-2-3 in the 200 fly after finishing with a time of 1:49.34. Fellow senior Lee Robertson (1:49.68) was second and Ian Vogt (1:50.37) was third. Virginia then took the top three spots in the 100 fly, with Robertson (49.38), Reams (50.00) and Eric Olesen (50.31) leading the way. The 200 breast was dominant was well, with Ryan Hurley taking first in 2:01.63, followed by teammates Tim Hayes (2:03.92) and Tony Colella (2:06.29).

Second-year Matt McLean was a double event winner in the 200 free (1:38.53) and the 500 free (4:31.49). Hurley also took the 100 breast, finishing with a mark of 56.51. Other event winners for UVa were Taylor Smith in the 1650 free (15:28.23), Eric Olesen in the 100 back (49.72), David Wren in the 200 back (1:49.18) and Scot Robison in the 100 free (45.04).

The 200 medley relay squad of Olesen, Hurley, Robertson, Robison also finished first with a time of 1:29.85.

Newcomer Briggy Imbriglia won the 1-meter event with a score of 299.47 to pace the Virginia divers.

The Virginia men will battle Tennessee on the road Nov. 6 while both squads will swim at Kentucky on Nov. 7.
