CHARLOTTESVILLE-Adrien Harraway, who has worked in the UVa athletics department's academic affairs area since 2005, has been named associate athletics director for academic affairs at Virginia. UVa Executive Associate Director of Athletics Jon Oliver made the announcement on Friday (Jan. 6).
Harraway has been assistant athletics director for academic affairs for football at Virginia since November of 2010. Prior to that he was the director of academic affairs for football since June of 2007 and also served as an assistant director/academic coordinator of academic affairs for football since coming to Virginia in the summer of 2005.
"Having Adrien take on the responsibility of leading the academic affairs unit was an easy decision based on his track record at the University of Virginia," Oliver said. "The academic affairs unit as a whole has done an exceptional job of fostering an environment for academic success for all of our sports and Adrien is the right person to lead this talented group of people moving forward. My expectation is that under Adrien's leadership, the academic affairs staff will continue to develop programming and support initiatives that will promote academic achievement for all of our student-athletes."
In his new position, Harraway is responsible for oversight and long-range planning in the academic affairs area, hiring and training staff, evaluating the program and designing its content, developing and implementing policy, and developing and managing the budget.
"I am very appreciative of this tremendous opportunity and challenge," Harraway said. "I look forward to working with a great group of student-athletes and staff. We will continue to support our student-athletes at the highest level to assist them in reaching their academic and career goals."
Harraway came to Virginia after earning a master's degree in higher education administration from Arizona State in 2005. While at Arizona State, he worked as a graduate assistant in the area of academic support with the football program from 2003-05.
He was an administrative intern for the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics from 2002-03. In that role he served as an assistant liaison for the International Collegiate Licensing Association, the National Association of Athletics Development Officers and the Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association.
Harraway earned his undergraduate degree in business administration from Northern Iowa in 2002. He played football at Northern Iowa and lettered three years as a safety.
Harraway's appointment is effective immediately.
