CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Four Virginia student-athletes were named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District team, announced Friday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Virginia wrestlers Jon Fausey (R-So., Dalmatia, Pa.) and Matt Snyder (R-Jr., Lewistown, Pa.) each were named to the men's at-large first team for District 3, while Sarah Borchelt (Sr., Sterling, Mass.) of the rowing team and Josie Owen (Sr., Gibson Island, Md.) of the lacrosse team each were selected to the women's at-large first team for District 3, which encompasses the states of North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.
By virtue of their first-team selections, the Cavaliers' quartet now is eligible for Academic All-America honors.
Fausey and Snyder earned the award in the men's at-large category, which includes student-athletes from fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
Borchelt and Owen earned their awards in the women's at-large category, which includes bowling, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, rowing, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball and water polo.
A kinesiology major with a 3.61 GPA, Fausey claimed the ACC championship at 184 pounds. He was seeded 12th at the 2012 NCAA Championships and reached the round of 12, falling one win shy of All-America status. He posted a 24-5 record, including a 10-0 mark in dual matches and a perfect 5-0 mark in ACC duals. Over half of his wins resulted in bonus points.
This marked Snyder's second straight Academic All-District honor; he claimed second-team honors in 2011. The 2012 ACC Champion at 125 pounds, Snyder finished the year with a 24-5 record, including a team-high eight falls. A kinesiology major with a 3.83 GPA, he was named the ACC Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Snyder was the No. 11 national seed at the NCAA Championships and went 2-2 at NCAAs, with both losses coming in narrow decisions to fellow seeded wrestlers.
Borchelt was the 2011 ACC Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A two-year team captain, she is a two-time Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete (2010 and 2011). She also was named to the 2011 All-ACC Academic Team. Majoring in nursing, Borchelt owns a 3.92 GPA.
Owen led the Cavaliers with 77 points, 42 goals, 35 assists and 46 draw controls. She was named to the All-ACC team at the conclusion of the regular season and earned a spot on the 2012 ACC All-Tournament Team. Additionally, she was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week on March 27. A nominee for the 2012 Tewaaraton Award, Owen also was named to the 2010 and 2011 All-ACC Academic Team. Majoring in history, she owns a 3.57 GPA.
