Keith VanDerbeek Announces Plans for Retirement at Virginia

Keith VanDerbeek

Nov. 14, 2012

Charlottesville, Va. - Virginia associate athletics director for business operations Keith VanDerbeek announced today he will retire effective March 1, 2013. He has headed up the business operations for the athletics department since 1978, serving as an associate athletics director for the past 28 years.

After working for the College of Arts and Sciences for one year, he joined the athletics department in 1978 as the athletics business manager. As the department has grown, his responsibilities have expanded to where the scope of his duties encompasses planning, organizing, directing and evaluating the business operations of all UVa athletics department activities.

"I want to express my appreciation to Keith for the 34 years that he has served the department of athletics running our business operations," said Virginia director of athletics Craig Littlepage. "He's helped this department transition its way through the early years when we were an underfunded program with many part-time employees and deficient facilities to this point where we operate with a $70-million budget. Over that time he's worked with five different directors of athletics helping the department develop and monitor its budget, its spending and adapt to the swings of the economy."

In addition to supervising the business operations staff and the manager of information systems, he acts as the financial adviser to the athletics director and coordinates the implementation and management of the department's operating budget. He serves as the department's liaison to the University's audit, budget, financial administration and procurement offices.

A native of Spring Valley, N.Y., VanDerbeek received a B.S. degree in economics and business from Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., in 1972 and an M.S. degree in accounting from UVa in 1977.

From 1972 to 1975, he served as credit analyst and auditor for the Chemical Bank of New York, investigating market and industry studies and compiling portfolio analyses. During his enrollment in graduate school at UVa, he taught introductory and cost accounting classes at the McIntire School of Commerce. In 1977, he was recruited as budget officer for the College of Arts and Sciences.

He is a member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the College Athletic Business Management Association and the National Association of Accountants.

VanDerbeek has served on numerous University-wide committees, including: Air Travel Service Committee, Capital Project Planning Committee, Centralized Accounts Payable Project, Committee on Safety and Security, Committee on Women's Concerns, Computer Resource Allocation Committee, Dining Services RFP Selection Committee, Outstanding Awards Committee, Integrated Systems Project Advisory Committee, Administration Technology Council, Human Resources Management Advisory Group and the University's Strategic Task Force for Athletics.

Keith and his wife, Pam, have two children, Kate and Peter.
