Gerry Capone
Gerry Capone

Position:
Associate AD for Football Administration

Gerry Capone is in his 35th year of association with the UVA football program. He works closely with head coach Bronco Mendenhall, overseeing all aspects of the program's day-to-day support operations.

Capone came to UVA in 1982 and spent two seasons as a part-time assistant on former head coach George Welsh's staff before being promoted to assistant director of athletics for football administration. He was named an associate athletics director in June of 1996.

A native of Dumont, N.J., Capone had stops at Cornell, as a part-time assistant and head JV coach, and at Columbia, as a part-time assistant coach, following his 1979 graduation from Bucknell.

Capone earned a B.S. degree in secondary education at Bucknell and then received a master's degree in physical education from Columbia in 1981. He played three seasons at outside linebacker at Bucknell, before an injury forced him to miss his senior season. As a senior, he got a jump on his coaching career by taking over as Bucknell's receivers coach.

After graduating from Bucknell, Capone spent a year as a social studies teacher at Cresskill (N.J.) High School, where he coached the freshman football team and the JV baseball squad.
