Life Skills Director

Phil Gates is the Life Skills Director for the Athletics Department and has served in this position for the last 14 years.

Gates coordinates and provides content for student-athletes in areas of career planning, community service and leadership/personal development.

Gates has served on several committees and numerous organizations: Team Co-leader, NCAA Leadership Conference, 2001; Co-Presenter NCAA Life Skills Continuing Education Conference, 2002; Co-Presenter NATA National Conference, 2003; UVA General Faculty Council, 2002-2008; UVA Vice President for Student Affairs Alcohol Advisory Committee; Athletics Diversity Committee.

Gates also is involved with his church as well as in coordinating various service opportunities with and for UVa student-athletes.

He is a 1970 graduate of the University of Virginia. He earned his master's in theology from the Perkins School of Theology of Southern Methodist University in 1978.

Prior to his time at UVa, he was the pastor of the United Methodist Church for 20 years.
