Director of Academics-Olympic Sports

Heather Downs joined the University of Virginia Academic Affairs staff in 2013. In 2015 she assumed the role of director of academics for Olympic sports. Downs previously served as the academic coordinator for the men's lacrosse, rowing, women's tennis and softball programs.

As the director of academics for Olympic sports, Downs monitors eligibility and progress toward degree, and assists in areas such as course selection, major declaration, and career planning.

Downs comes to UVa with a rich background in student affairs management experience. She worked in the Office of Student Life at the University of California for two years, serving as the interim assistant director her final 10 months. She managed the development and implementation of campus leadership programs, oversaw a staff of professional leadership programmers and supervised peer advising teams.

She previously worked in student support services at Northern Colorado as the facilitator of academic advising, specifically with high-risk students.

Downs has worked extensively in career development with students to assist them with their objectives following their undergraduate studies.

Downs graduated from Florida in 1999 with a degree in environmental engineering. She received her master's degree in student affairs in higher education from Colorado State in 2002.
