Kate Stephensen has been an academic coordinator at the University of Virginia since 2015.

Stephensen has ten years of experience as a swim instructor and coach. She is an American Swim Coaches Association level II coach and has coached with the Davis Aquamonsters (California), the Northwestern affiliated club team (Illinois), the Virginia Gators (Virginia) and Crimson Aquatics (Massachusetts). She has coached age group swimmers, Masters swimmers, ironman triathletes, and college athletes.

Stephensen began her swimming career in California with the Davis Aquamonsters at the age of nine. In college she competed in the distance events for Northwestern University. As an upperclassman at Northwestern and a postgraduate swimmer with team at the University of Virginia, she enjoyed success as an open water swimmer. In addition to placing in the top sixteen at the 2011 USA Swimming Open Water Championships, she was a member of the 2012 National Open Water Select Team. Stephensen is the USMS national record holder in the pool 10k, and raced in the 2013 Tiburon mile elite division.

Stephensen has a bachelor of arts in history from Northwestern University (2011) and a master's of education from the University of Virginia (2013). Between undergrad and grad school she ran a mentoring program for high school students on Chicago's South Side and taught refugee students at Evanston Township High School.
