This Week in Virginia Sports

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - UVa's fall sports have mostly opened their seasons. The year to date record is 18-6-3(72.2%).

FOOTBALL: Coach: George Welsh, 17th season at Virginia, record: 106-69-3. 1997-98 record, 1-1. Last week, UVa played Richmond(26-7 won). This week, UVa is idle.

MEN'S SOCCER: Coach: George Gelnovatch, second season at Virginia, record: 18-4-5. 1997-98 record, 2-1-2. Last week, UVa played Central Connecticut St.( 4--0 won) and Maryland(0-0, tie). This week, UVa plays Virginia Tech(Wed., Sept. 17, 7:00 PM, Kloeckner Stadium) and Wake Forest(Sun., Sept. 21, 2:00 PM, Kloeckner Stadium).

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Coach: April Heinrichs, second season at Virginia, record: 16-7-3. 1997-98 record, 4-0-1. Last week, UVa played Old Dominion(2-1 won) and in the adidas/Lady Foot Locker Tournament in Portland(OR)(Washington 4-2 won, Portland 1-0 won; team champion). This week, UVa hosts its own Coca Cola Classic(Fri.-Sat. Sept. 19-20, 5:00-7:00 PM, Kloeckner Stadium).

FIELD HOCKEY: Coach: Melissa Sanders, fifth season at Virginia, record: 56-32. 1997-98 record, 5-0. Last week, UVa played Northwestern(2-0 won) and Miami(OH)(4-0 won). This week, UVa plays Davis & Elkins(Wed., Sept. 17, 7:00 PM, U-Hall Turf Field) and North Carolina(Sun., Sept. 21, 3:30 PM, away).

VOLLEYBALL: Coach: Melissa Aldrich Shelton, third season at Virginia, record: 39-38. 1997-98 record, 6-5. Last week, UVa played in the Radisson/Marshall Trn.(Marshall 3-0 won, Cincinnati 3-1 won, Indiana 3-0 loss, 2nd team finish). This week, UVa plays William & Mary today and hosts its own Virginia Invitational(Fri.-Sat., Sept. 19-20, Memorial Gym).

CROSS COUNTRY: Coach: Randy Bungard, first season at Virginia: record 0-0. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa hosted its own Invitational(women 2nd team, men 5th team). This week, UVa runs at George Mason(Sat., Sept. 20, 10:30- AM, away).

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Coach Phil Rogers, 16th season at Virginia, record: 163-144. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa played in the SUNITY Classic in Syracuse(individual results only). This week, UVa is idle.

MEN'S GOLF: Coach: Mike Moraghan, ninth season at Virginia, record: no dual meets. 1997-98, no dual matches. Last week, UVa was idle. This week, UVa hosts its own Keswick Tournament( Sat.-Sun., Sept. 20-21, Keswick Course.
