This Week in Virginia Sports

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - UVa's fall sports have mostly opened their seasons. The year to date record is 28-6-3(79.7%).

FOOTBALL: Coach: George Welsh, 17th season at Virginia, record: 106-69-3. 1997-98 record, 1-1. Last week, UVa was idle. This week, UVa plays North Carolina(Sat., Sept. 27, Noon, away).

MEN'S SOCCER: Coach: George Gelnovatch, second season at Virginia, record: 20-4-5. 1997-98 record, 4-1-2. Last week, UVa played Virginia Tech(3-1 won) and Wake Forest(3-1 won). This week, UVa plays VCU(Wed., Sept. 24, 7:00 PM, Kloeckner Stadium) and North Carolina(Sun., Sept. 28, 2:00 PM, Kloeckner Stadium).

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Coach: April Heinrichs, second season at Virginia, record: 18-7-3. 1997-98 record, 6-0-1. Last week, UVa played in its own Coca Cola Classic(Kansas 4-0 won, Princeton 3-0 won; first, team). This week, UVa plays George Washington(Tue., Sept. 23, 7:00 PM, Kloeckner Stadium), Duke(Fri., Sept. 26, 7:00 PM, away), and Wake Forest(Sun., Sept. 28, 1:00 PM, away).

FIELD HOCKEY: Coach: Melissa Sanders, fifth season at Virginia, record: 58-32. 1997-98 record, 7-0. Last week, UVa played Davis & Elkins(9-0 won) and North Carolina(2-0 won). This week, UVa plays James Madison(Wed., Sept. 24, 7:00 PM, U-Hall Turf Field) and Old Dominion(Sun., Sept. 28, 1:00 PM, U-Hall Turf Field).

VOLLEYBALL: Coach: Melissa Aldrich Shelton, third season at Virginia, record: 43-38. 1997-98 record, 10-5. Last week, UVa played William & Mary(won 3-0)and in its own Virginia Invitational(Villanova 3-2 won, Northeastern 3-1 won, Iowa St. 3-1 won; team, first). This week, UVa plays NC State(Fri., Sept. 26, 7:30 PM, away) and North Carolina(Sun., Sept. 28, 4:00 PM, away).

CROSS COUNTRY: Coach: Randy Bungard, first season at Virginia: record 0-0. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa ran at George Mason(men, 6th team; women, 2nd team). This week, UVa runs at Maryland(Sat., Sept. 27, 10:30 AM, away).

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Coach Phil Rogers, 16th season at Virginia, record: 163-144. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa was idle. This week, UVa plays in the pre-qualifying National Clay Court Trn.(Sat.-Tue., Sept. 27-30, Orlando).

MEN'S GOLF: Coach: Mike Moraghan, ninth season at Virginia, record: no dual meets. 1997-98, no dual matches. Last week, UVa hosted its own Keswick Tournament( 1st, team; Lewis Chitengwa second, individual). This week, UVa plays at the Tennessee Trn. of Champions(Mon.-Tue., Sept. 29-30, away).

MEN'S TENNIS: Coach Thomas Johnston, fifth season at Virginia, record, 54-38. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa got started in preliminary National Clay Courts rounds. This week, action continues in the National Clay Court Trn. in Baltimore(all week).
