CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - UVa's fall sports have mostly opened their seasons. The year to date record is 34-10-3(75.5%).

FOOTBALL: Coach: George Welsh, 17th season at Virginia, record: 106-70-3. 1997-98 record, 1-2. Last week, UVa played North Carolina(48-20 loss). This week, UVa plays Wake Forest(Homecoming, Sat., Oct. 4, Noon, Scott Stadium).

MEN'S SOCCER: Coach: George Gelnovatch, second season at Virginia, record: 22-4-5. 1997-98 record, 6-1-2. Last week, UVa played VCU(2-1 won) and North Carolina(2-1 won ). This week, UVa plays Liberty(Wed., Oct. 1, 7:00 PM, Klöckner Stadium) and NC State(Sun., Oct. 5, 2:00 PM, away).

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Coach: April Heinrichs, second season at Virginia, record: 20-8-3. 1997-98 record, 8-1-1. Last week, UVa played George Washington(4-1 won), Duke(3-2 loss), and Wake Forest(3-2 won). This week, UVa plays William & Mary(Wed., Oct.1, 5:00 PM, Klöckner Stadium).

FIELD HOCKEY: Coach: Melissa Sanders, fifth season at Virginia, record: 59-33. 1997-98 record, 8-1. Last week, UVa played James Madison(4-1 won) and Old Dominion(2-0 loss). This week, UVa plays William & Mary(Wed., Oct. 1, 7:00 PM, away) and Maryland(Sun., Oct. 5, 1:00 PM, away).

VOLLEYBALL: Coach: Melissa Aldrich Shelton, third season at Virginia, record: 44-39. 1997-98 record, 11-6. Last week, UVa played NC State(3-0 won) and North Carolina(3-0 loss ). This week, UVa plays Maryland(Sun., Oct. 5, 7:00 PM, Memorial Gym).

CROSS COUNTRY: Coach: Randy Bungard, first season at Virginia: record 0-0. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa ran at Maryland(both teams finished first). This week, UVa is idle.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Coach Phil Rogers, 16th season at Virginia, record: 163-144. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa played in the pre-qualifying National Clay Court Trn.(individual resutls only). This week, UVa plays in the National Clay Courts Trn.(Thur.-Sun., Oct. 2-5, Orlando).

MEN'S GOLF: Coach: Mike Moraghan, ninth season at Virginia, record: no dual meets. 1997-98, no dual matches. UVa finishes at the Tennessee Trn. of Champions today. This week, UVa is idle.

MEN'S TENNIS: Coach Thomas Johnston, fifth season at Virginia, record, 54-38. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa concluded the National Clay Court Trn. in Baltimore(individual results only). This week, UVa plays at the ODU Invitational(Fri.-Sun., Oct. 3-5, away).

WOMEN'S ROWING: Coach: Kevin Sauer, third season at Virginia, record: 9-0. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa was idle. This week, UVa competes at Pittsburgh(the Head of the Ohio races, Sat., Oct. 4, away).
