CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - UVa's fall sports have now all opened their seasons. The year to date record is 39-12-3(75.0%).

FOOTBALL: Coach: George Welsh, 16th season at Virginia, record: 107-70-3. 1997-98 record, 2-2. Last week, UVa played Wake Forest(21-13 won). This week, UVa plays Clemson(Sat., Oct. 11, 6:00 PM, away).

MEN'S SOCCER: Coach: George Gelnovatch, second season at Virginia, record: 23-5-5. 1997-98 record, 7-2-2. Last week, UVa played Liberty(5-2 won) and NC State(2-1 loss). This week, UVa plays Georgetown(Wed., Oct. 8, 3:30 PM, away) and Seton Hall(Sat., Oct. 11, 1:00 PM, away).

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Coach: April Heinrichs, second season at Virginia, record: 21-8-3. 1997-98 record, 9-1-1. Last week, UVa played William & Mary(3-2 won). This week, UVa plays James Madison today and NC State(Fri., Oct. 10, 7:00 PM, Kloeckner Stadium).

FIELD HOCKEY: Coach: Melissa Sanders, fifth season at Virginia, record: 61-34. 1997-98 record, 10-1. Last week, UVa played William & Mary(3-1 won) and Maryland(3-2 won). This week, UVa plays Georgetown(Wed., Oct. 8, 3:30 PM, away) and St. Louis(Sun., Oct. 12, 1:00 PM, U-Hall Turf Field).

VOLLEYBALL: Coach: Melissa Aldrich Shelton, third season at Virginia, record: 44-40. 1997-98 record, 11-7. Last week, UVa played Maryland(3-0 loss). This week, UVa plays VCU today, Florida St.(Fri., Oct. 10, 7:00 PM, Memorial Gym), Wake Forest(Sat., Oct. 11, 7:00 PM, Memorial Gym), and Duke(Sun., Oct. 12, 4:00 PM, Memorial Gym).

CROSS COUNTRY: Coach: Randy Bungard, first season at Virginia: record 0-0. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa was idle. This week, UVa runs at Furman(Sat., Oct. 11, 10:30 AM, away, men & women).

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Coach Phil Rogers, 16th season at Virginia, record: 163-147. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa played in the National Clay Courts Trn.(individual results only). This week, UVa plays in the Brown Invit.(Fri.-Sun., Oct. 10-12, away).

MEN'S GOLF: Coach: Mike Moraghan, ninth season at Virginia, record: no dual meets. 1997-98, no dual matches. Last week, UVa concluded play at the Tennessee Trn. of Champions(8th team). This week, UVa is idle.

MEN'S TENNIS: Coach Thomas Johnston, fifth season at Virginia, record, 54-38. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa played at the ODU Invitational(individual results only). This week, UVa hosts the annual State Meet(Fri.-Sun., Oct. 10-12, Snyder Tennis Center).

WOMEN'S ROWING: Coach: Kevin Sauer, third season at Virginia, record: 8-0. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa competed at Pittsburgh(the Head of the Ohio races, 1st team overall). This week, UVa is idle.
