Charlottesville...UVa's fall sports are now moving toward the championship portion of their seasons, while the winter sports are beginning. The year to date record is 66-24-4(72.3%).

FOOTBALL: Coach: George Welsh, 16th season at Virginia, record: 110-71-3. 1997-98 record, 5-3. Last week, UVa played Maryland(45-0 won). This week, UVa plays Georgia Tech(Sat., Nov. 8, 3:30 PM, Scott Stadium, ABC-TV).

MEN'S SOCCER: Coach: George Gelnovatch, second season at Virginia, record: 27-6-6. 1997-98 record, 11-3-3. Last week, UVa played Mt. St. Mary's (3-0 won) and Old Dominion(1-0 loss). This week, UVa plays George Mason(Fri., Nov. 7, 7:00 PM, Kloeckner Stadium).

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Coach: April Heinrichs, second season at Virginia, record: 26-10-3. 1997-98 record, 13-3-2. Last week, UVa played Maryland(2-1 won) and North Carolina(3-0 loss). This week, UVa plays in the ACC Tournament(Thur.-Sun., Nov. 6-9, @ Wake Forest).

FIELD HOCKEY: Coach: Melissa Sanders, fifth season at Virginia, record: 68-34. 1997-98 record, 17-1. Last week, UVa played Duke(5-1 won). This week, UVa plays in the ACC Tournment(Fri.-Sun., Nov. 7-9, @UNC).

VOLLEYBALL: Coach: Melissa Aldrich Shelton, third season at Virginia, record: 49-46. 1997-98 record, 16-13. Last week, UVa played Virginia Tech(3-0 won), Georgia Tech(3-0 loss), and Clemson(3-0 loss). This week, UVa plays Maryland today and Florida St.(Sat. Nov. 8, 4:00 PM, away).

SWIMMING: Coach: Mark Bernardino, 20th season at Virginia, record: 121-75 men, 136-57-1.1997-98 record, 1-0 men, 0-1 women. Last week, UVa opened the 1997-98 season against Clemson(men 148-83, won; women 144.5-98.5, loss). This week, UVa swims Pitt(Sun., Nov. 9, Noon, Smith Center).
