Charlottesville...UVa's fall sports are now moving toward the championship portion of their seasons, while the winter sports are beginning. The year to date record is 71-27-4(71.6%).

FOOTBALL: Coach: George Welsh, 16th season at Virginia, record: 111-71-3. 1997-98 record, 6-3. Last week, UVa played Georgia Tech(35-31 won). This week, UVa plays NC State(Sat., Nov. 15, Noon, away, JP TV).

MEN'S SOCCER: Coach: George Gelnovatch, second season at Virginia, record: 28-6-6. 1997-98 record, 12-3-3. Last week, UVa played George Mason(3-1 won). This week, UVa plays in the ACC Tournament(Thur.-Sun., Nov. 13-16, Orlando).

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Coach: April Heinrichs, second season at Virginia, record: 26-11-3. 1997-98 record, 13-4-2. Last week, UVa played in the ACC Tournament(Clemson 1-0 loss). This week, UVa finds out late today about its NCAA bid.

FIELD HOCKEY: Coach: Melissa Sanders, fifth season at Virginia, record: 69-35. 1997-98 record, 18-2. Last week, nationally top-ranked( for only the second time) UVa played in the ACC Tournament(Duke 2-1 won; North Carolina(2-0 loss). This week, UVa awaits an NCAA bid.

VOLLEYBALL: Coach: Melissa Aldrich Shelton, third season at Virginia, record: 49-48. 1997-98 record, 16-15. Last week, UVa played Maryland(3-0 loss) and Florida St.(3-0 loss). This week, UVa plays North Carolina(Fri., Nov. 14, 7:00 PM, Memorial Gym) and NC State(Sat., Nov. 15, 7:00 PM, Memorial Gym).

CROSS COUNTRY: Coach: Randy Bungard, first season at Virginia: record 0-0. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa was idle. This week, UVa will attend the NCAA Region III Meet(Sat., Nov. 15, 10:30 AM, Greenville, SC).

MEN'S GOLF: Coach: Mike Moraghan, ninth season at Virginia, record: no dual meets. 1997-98, no dual matches. Last week, UVa played in the CC of Louisiana Tournament(12th). This week, UVa is idle.

MEN'S TENNIS: Coach Thomas Johnston, fifth season at Virginia, record, 54-38. 1997-98 record, no dual matches. Last week, UVa was in the Rolex Reg. Tournament (individual results only). The season is now complete.

WOMEN'S ROWING: Coach: Kevin Sauer, third season at Virginia, record: 8-0. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa was at the Princeton Chase(individual event results only). This week, UVa is at the Belly of the Carnegie(Sat., Nov. 15, at Princeton).

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach: Jeff Jones, eighth season at Virginia, record: 135-85. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa had two exhibitions(Court Authority, 74-72 won) and the Australian National team(70-59 loss). This week, UVa opens its season at Richmond(Sun., Nov. 16, 7:00 PM, away, HTS TV).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach: Debbie Ryan, 20th season at Virginia, record: 462-155. 1997-98 record, 0-0. This week, UVa had two exhibitions(Denamo 73-62 won) and Soproni Hungary(86-77 loss). This week, UVa opens its season with William & Mary(Sun., Nov. 16, 3:30 PM, University Hall).

SWIMMING: Coach: Mark Bernardino, 20th season at Virginia, record: 122-75 men, 137-57-1.1997-98 record, 2-0 men, 1-1 women. Last week, UVa swam Pitt(men 163-131 won; women 168.5-128.5 won). This week,UVa swims Virginia Tech(Sat., Nov. 15, 1:00 PM, Smith Center).

WRESTLING: Coach: Lenny Bernstein, fifth season at Virginia, record: 31-28. 1997-98 record, 0-0. UVa opens its season Nov. 15, at the Keydet Invitational(Sat., Nov,. 15, at VMI).
