Charlottesville...UVa's fall sports have now almost finished the championship portion of their seasons, while the winter sports are well under way. The year to date record is 95-34-4(72.9%).

FOOTBALL: Coach: George Welsh, 16th season at Virginia, record: 112-72-3). 1997-98 record: 7-4. The season is now complete.

MEN'S SOCCER: Coach: George Gelnovatch, second season at Virginia, record: 34-6-6. 1997-98 record, 18-3-3. Last week, UVa played American Univ. in the NCAA Quarterfinals(2-1 overtime won). This week, UVa plays in the NCAA Championships weekend at Richmond. The Cavaliers face St. Louis in the semifinals at 6:00 PM on Friday, Dec. 12(HTS-TV). The finals are Sun., Dec. 14, at 1:00 PM.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach: Jeff Jones, eighth season at Virginia, record: 139-87. 1997-98 record, 4-2. Last week, UVa played Appalachian St.(62-54 won) and Duke(103-59 loss). SWIMMING: Coach: Mark Bernardino, 20th season at Virginia, record: 123-75 men, 138-57-1. 1997-98 record, 3-0 men, 2-1 women. Last week, UVa hosted an Invitational Meet( men's team, second; women's team, first ). Coming up, UVa has action at the Georgia Diving Invitational(Sat.-Mon., Jan. 3-5, away) and Rowan(Mon., Jan.12, 3:30 PM, away).

WRESTLING: Coach: Lenny Bernstein, fifth season at Virginia, record: 32-28. 1997-98 record, 1-0. Last week, UVa wrestled VMI(31-13 won) and went to the Penn St. Open(individual results only). Coming up, UVa goes to the Midlands Championships(Mon.-Tue., Dec. 29-30, Evanston, IL), the Dallas Duals(Sat., Jan. 3, away), and the Virginia Duals(Fri.-Sat., Jan. 9-10, @Hampton).

INDOOR TRACK: Coach: Randy Bungard, first season at Virginia, record: no dual meets. 1997-98 record, no dual meets. Last week, UVa opened its season Dec. 5, with a meet at Fork Union(individual results only).
