This Week in Virginia Sports

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - UVa's winter sports are well under way, with the spring sports just starting play. The year to date record is 114-56-5(66.6%).

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach: Jeff Jones, eighth season at Virginia, record: 145-95. 1997-98 record, 10-10. Last week, UVa played Clemson(69-52 loss), Duke( 72-65 loss), and Wake Forest(tonight). This week, UVa plays Maryland(Sun., Feb. 1, 4:00 PM, away, RJ-TV).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach: Debbie Ryan, 20th season at Virginia, record: 475-159. 1997-98 record, 13-4. Last week, UVa played Duke(93-66 loss) and Old Dominion(tonight). This week, UVa plays Georgia Tech(Fri., Jan. 30, 7:30 PM, University Hall, WNVT-TV and Florida St.(Sun., Feb. 1, 2:00 PM, away).

SWIMMING: Coach: Mark Bernardino, 20th season at Virginia, record: 125-76 men, 140-58-1. 1997-98 record, 5-1 men, 4-2 women. Last week, UVa swam North Carolina(men 176-118 loss; women 160-140 loss). This week, UVa swims Villanova(Sat., Jan. 31, 1:00 PM, Smith Aquatics Center).

WRESTLING: Coach: Lenny Bernstein, fifth season at Virginia, record: 35-34. 1997-98 record, 3-6. Last week, UVa wrestled North Carolina(18-12 loss), Virginia Tech(25-12 won), and The Citadel(29-18 won). This week, UVa has Duke(Fri., Jan. 30, 8:00 PM, away) and NC State(Sat., Jan. 31, 1:00 PM, away).

INDOOR TRACK: Coach: Randy Bungard, first season at Virginia, record: no dual meets. 1997-98 record, no dual meets. Last week, UVa was at Johnson City, TN, for a meet(individual results only). This week, UVa is idle.

MEN'S TENNIS: Coach Thomas Johnston, fifth season at Virginia, record, 54-38. 1997-98 record, no dual matches. Last week, UVA was at the ACC Indoor Meet @ Clemson(individual results only). This week, UVa faces Ball St.(Sat., Jan. 31, 1:00 PM, at Michigan) and Michigan(Sun., Feb. 1, 11:00 AM, away).

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Coach Phil Rogers, 16th season at Virginia, record: 165-148. 1997-98 record, 2-1(Fall). Last week, UVa was at the ACC Indoor Meet(individual results only). This week, UVa is idle.

SOFTBALL: Coach: Cheryl Sprangel, first season at Virginia, record: 0-0. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa was idle. UVa opens Feb. 14.

BASEBALL: Coach: Dennis Womack, 18th season at Virginia, record: 440-425-5. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa was idle. UVa opens Feb. 13.
