Charlottesville...UVa's winter sports are well under way, with the spring sports just starting play. The year to date record is 121-59-5(66.8%).

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach: Jeff Jones, eighth season at Virginia, record: 145-97. 1997-98 record, 10-12. Last week, UVa played Wake Forest(62-55 loss)and Maryland(77-70 loss). This week, UVa plays Florida St.(Wed., Feb. 4, 7:30 PM, University Hall).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach: Debbie Ryan, 20th season at Virginia, record: 477-160. 1997-98 record, 15-5. Last week, UVa played Old Dominion(80-51 loss), Georgia Tech(93-57 won), and Florida St.(83-76 won, ot ). This week, UVa plays Clemson(Thur., Feb. 5, 7:30 PM, WNVT-TV), and Maryland(Mon., Feb. 9, 7:00 PM, away, HTS-TV).

SWIMMING: Coach: Mark Bernardino, 20th season at Virginia, record: 126-76 men, 141-58-1. 1997-98 record, 6-1 men, 5-2 women. Last week, UVa swam Villanova(men 120-98 won; women 120-103 won). This week, UVa swims Maryland and Duke(Sat., Feb. 7, 1:00 PM, Smith Aquatics Center).

WRESTLING: Coach: Lenny Bernstein, fifth season at Virginia, record: 37-34. 1997-98 record, 3-6. Last week, UVa wrestled Duke(33-3 won) and NC State(25-12 won). This week, UVa faces Maryland(Fri., Feb. 6, 6:00 PM, Memorial Gym) and Howard and Old Dominion(both, Sat., Feb. 7, starting at 1:00 PM, Memorial Gym).

INDOOR TRACK: Coach: Randy Bungard, first season at Virginia, record: no dual meets. 1997-98 record, no dual meets. Last week, UVa was idle. This week, UVa goes to Fairfax for a meet(the George Mason Winter Invit., Sat., Feb. 7, away).

MEN'S TENNIS: Coach Thomas Johnston, fifth season at Virginia, record, 55-39. 1997-98 record, 1-1. Last week, UVA played Ball St.(6-1 won) and Michigan(4-3 loss ). This week, UVa plays Georgetown(Sat., Feb. 7, Noon in Richmond) and George Washington(Sat., Feb. 7, 3:00 PM in Richmond).

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Coach Phil Rogers, 16th season at Virginia, record: 165-148. 1997-98 record, 2-1(Fall). Last week, UVa was idle. This week, UVa plays Old Dominion(Sat., Feb. 7, 4:00 PM, away) and in the National Indoor Trn.(Thur.-Sun., Feb.5-8, in Dallas).

SOFTBALL: Coach: Cheryl Sprangel, first season at Virginia, record: 0-0. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa was idle. UVa opens Feb. 14.

BASEBALL: Coach: Dennis Womack, 18th season at Virginia, record: 440-425-5. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa was idle. UVa opens Feb. 13.
