This Week in Virginia Sports

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - UVa's winter sports are well under way, with the spring sports just starting play. The year to date record is 133-61-5(68.0%).

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach: Jeff Jones, eighth season at Virginia, record: 145-98. 1997-98 record, 10-13. Last week, UVa played Florida St.(71-63 loss). This week, UVa plays North Carolina(Wed., Feb. 11, 9:00 PM, University Hall, ESPN-TV) and Georgia Tech(Sat., Feb. 14, Noon, away, RSN-TV).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach: Debbie Ryan, 20th season at Virginia, record: 479-160. 1997-98 record, 17-5. Last week, UVa played Clemson(72-55 won), and Maryland(47-45 won). This week, UVa plays NC State(Thur., Feb. 12, 7:00 PM, away, HTS-TV) and North Carolina(Sun., Feb. 15, 5:00 PM, University Hall, HTS-TV).

SWIMMING: Coach: Mark Bernardino, 20th season at Virginia, record: 128-76 men, 143-58-1. 1997-98 record, 8-1 men, 7-2 women. Last week, UVa swam Maryland(men 130-102 won, women 126-101 won) and Duke(men 135-61 won, women 132-90). This week, UVa is idle.

WRESTLING: Coach: Lenny Bernstein, fifth season at Virginia, record: 39-34. 1997-98 record, 8-6. Last week, Maryland(30-9 won), Howard(58-0 won), and Old Dominion(31-9 won). This week, UVa will attend the Edinboro Open Trn.(Sat., Feb. 14, away).

INDOOR TRACK: Coach: Randy Bungard, first season at Virginia, record: no dual meets. 1997-98 record, no dual meets. Last week, UVa went to Fairfax for a meet(individual results only). This week, UVa will attend the Fork Union Invit.(today ) and the VPI meet(Fri.-Sat., Feb. 13-14, away).

MEN'S TENNIS: Coach Thomas Johnston, fifth season at Virginia, record, 57 -39. 1997-98 record, 3-1. Last week, UVA played Georgetown(5-0 won) and George Washington(5-0 won). This week, UVa faces William & Mary(Wed., Feb.. 11, 6:00 PM, away).

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Coach Phil Rogers, 16th season at Virginia, record: 166-148. 1997-98 record, 2-1(Fall) and 1-0 Spring. Last week, UVa played Old Dominion(8-1) won). This week, UVa hosts Illinois(Fri., Feb. 13, 6:30 PM, Boar's Head Inn) and Virginia Tech(Sat., Feb. 14, 3:00 PM, Boar's Head Inn Courts).

SOFTBALL: Coach: Cheryl Sprangel, first season at Virginia, record: 0-0. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa was idle. This week, UVa opens its season at Campbell(Sat., Feb. 14, 1:00 PM, away, 2 games) and UNC-Greensboro(Sun., Feb. 15, 1:00 PM, away).

BASEBALL: Coach: Dennis Womack, 18th season at Virginia, record: 440-425-5. 1997-98 record, 0-0. Last week, UVa was idle. This week, UVa opens its season against Rice(Fri., Feb. 13, 4:30 PM, away), South Alabama(Sat., Feb. 14, 4:30 PM, @Houston), and Oklahoma St.(Sun., Feb. 15, Noon, @Houston).

MEN'S GOLF: Coach: Mike Moraghan, ninth season at Virginia, record: no dual meets. 1997-98, no dual matches. Last week, UVa was idle. UVa opens the spring season, Feb. 23-24.
