This Week in Virginia Sports

Charlottesville...UVa's winter sports are well under way, with the spring sports just starting play. The year to date record is 145-73-5(66.4%).

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach: Jeff Jones, eighth season at Virginia, record: 146-101. 1997-98 record, 11-16. Last week, UVa played NC State(74-55 loss), Clemson(78-74 won, overtime), and Maryland(tonight). This week, UVa plays Maryland tonight and Florida St(Sat. Feb. 28, 4:00 PM, away, RJ-TV).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach: Debbie Ryan, 20th season at Virginia, record: 480-163. 1997-98 record, 18-8. Last week, UVa played Wake Forest(60-51 won) and Duke(85-78 loss, overtime). This week, UVa is in the annual ACC Tournament(Thur.-Sun., Feb 26-Mar. 1, Charlotte). UVa will play North Carolina(5 vs. 4), 12:30 PM, Fri., Feb. 27, @Charlotte.

SWIMMING: Coach: Mark Bernardino, 20th season at Virginia, record: 128-76 men, 143-58-1. 1997-98 record, 8-1 men, 7-2 women. Last week, UVa hosted the ACC women's meet(first, team; UVa's second team title). This week, UVa hosts the ACC Men's meet(Wed.-Sat., Feb. 25-28, Smith Aquatics Center).

WRESTLING: Coach: Lenny Bernstein, fifth season at Virginia, record: 39-35. 1997-98 record, 8-7. Last week, UVa wrestled Clarion (22-15 loss). This week, UVa is idle.

INDOOR TRACK: Coach: Randy Bungard, first season at Virginia, record: no dual meets. 1997-98 record, no dual meets. Last week, UVa went to the ACC Meet(men, sixth team; women, seventh team). This week, UVa is idle.

MEN'S TENNIS: Coach Thomas Johnston, fifth season at Virginia, record, 59-40. 1997-98 record, 5-2. Last week, UVA played Richmond(6-1 won ) and VCU(6-1 loss). This week, UVa plays New Mexico(Sat. , Feb. 28, 3 PM, @Boise St.) and Boise St.(Sun., Mar. 1, 3:00 PM, away).

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Coach Phil Rogers, 16th season at Virginia, record: 167-149. 1997-98 record, 2-1(Fall) and 2-1 Spring. Last week, UVa was idle. This week, UVa plays Florida St.(Sun., Mar. 1, 2:00 PM, Snyder Courts).

SOFTBALL: Coach: Cheryl Sprangel, first season at Virginia, record: 2-2. 1997-98 record, 2-2. Last week, UVa was rained out with UNBC(replay date, March 4, 3:00 PM, here). This week, UVa plays on its Spring trip at Cal. St.-Fullerton(Thur.-Sun., Feb. 26-Mar. 1, various times).

BASEBALL: Coach: Dennis Womack, 18th season at Virginia, record: 445-426-5. 1997-98 record, 5-1. Last week, UVa played Penn St.(5-2 won,9-2 won,8-4 won). This week, UVa plays VMI(Wed. , Feb. 25, 3:00 PM, UVa Baseball Field), Seton Hall(Sat.-Sun., Feb. 28-Mar. 1., Noon, 1:00PM, UVa Baseball Field), Radford(Tue., Mar. 3, 3;00 PM, away), and William & Mary(Wed., Mar. 4, 3:00 PM, UVa Baseball Field).

MEN'S GOLF: Coach: Mike Moraghan, ninth season at Virginia, record: no dual meets. 1997-98, no dual matches. Last week, UVa opened its spring season at the NCAA Puerto Rico Trn.(still playing). This week, UVa is idle.

MEN'S LACROSSE: Coach: Dom Starsia, sixth season at Virginia, record: 58-19. !997-98 record: 0-0. Last week, UVa was idle. This week, UVa opens against Syracuse(Sat., Feb. 28, 2:00 PM, U-Hall Turf Field) and Mercyhurst(Tue., Mar. 3, 3:00 PM, U-Hall Turf Field).
