CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #2 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team posted its first shutout of the 2001 season with a 1-0 victory over the visiting Wake Forest Demon Deacons in front of 1,203 spectators at Kl?ckner Stadium this evening. In the ACC-opener for both teams, UVa’s Alecko Eskandarian (Montvale, N.J./Bergen Catholic) scored the contest’s only goal at the 34:25 mark to give the Cavaliers their first conference win of the season.

Eskandarian’s goal resulted in a play that was started by the Cavaliers’ Jonathan Cole (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh). Cole gained possession of the ball for UVa near midfield and sent a pass to teammate Kyle Martino (Westport, Conn./Staples), who was out on the left flank. Martino gathered Cole’s pass and sent a cross into the box where Eskandarian slid through the Wake Forest defense and chipped in a shot from five yards out. Eskandarian’s goal, his fifth of the season, would prove to be the game-winner as the Cavaliers’ defense held the Demon Deacons scoreless for the first time this season.

UVa’s David Comfort (Richmond, Va./Monacan) gathered two saves in goal to earn his first shutout of the year (ninth of his career). WFU’s William Hesmer collected a game-high eight saves between the pipes in a losing effort.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 4-0-1 overall, 1-0-0 in the ACC. Wake Forest falls to 2-2-0 overall, 0-1-0 in the conference after the loss. UVa is now 22-2-4 all-time against WFU.

The Cavaliers will return to home action on Saturday, September 22nd when UVa hosts the North Carolina Tar Heels at 7:00 p.m. The contest will be played at Kl?ckner Stadium. The Demon Deacons will return to action on Wednesday, September 19th when Wake Forest hosts the Richmond Spiders at 7:00 p.m. That game will be played at Spry Stadium.
