Sports Medicine Shadowing at the University of Virginia

med_shadowing_1 The Sports Medicine Department at the University of Virginia has created a shadowing experience for students interested in athletic training as a profession.

This experience was created to expose high school and undergraduate students to the profession of athletic training in the collegiate setting.

The shadowing experience allows students to observe one of our staff athletic trainers before, during, and after a practice session.

Shadowing experiences will vary depending on the date a student chooses to shadow.

Each shadowing experience will potentially offer the following:

  • Tour of Athletic Training Facilities
  • Observation of pre-practice preparation and treatments
  • Observation of rehabilitation of injured athletes
  • Observation of on-site practice coverage
  • Recap and discussion of the day's events with fellow student shadowers

Due to NCAA recruiting rules, the Sports Medicine Staff is not permitted to contact high school students. Students interested in a shadowing opportunity must call the Sports Medicine Department at 434-243-2423 and ask for shadowing coordinator, Shelley Blakey. Spaces are limited and are reserved on a first come first serve basis. Shadowing experiences will typically last 4-5 hours.

Shadowing dates for Spring 2013 are January 18, March 29, and April 2
