Virginia Swimmers Named to National Teams

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --The University of Virginia men's swimming and diving team will be represented on two teams at the World University Games in Trapani, Italy, August 21-30. Shamek Pietucha (Edmonton, Alberta) is a member of the Canadian World University Games Team and Austin Ramirez (Brookfield, Wisc.) is a member of the team representing the United States.

Pietucha earned a spot on the Canadian team by finishing second in both the 100 and 200-meter butterfly recently at the Canadian National Championships.

Ramirez earned a spot on the United States team by finishing fourth in the 800-meter freestyle at the recent national championships. He also finished 10th in the 400-meter freestyle and 12th in the 1500-meter freestyle. Ramirez is expected to compete in all three events at the World University Games.

Ramirez also won the national championship in the open water five kilometer swim. He will represent the United States in that event at the World Championships in Sydney, Australia, in January of 1998.

Virginia's Doak Finch (Southern Pines, N.C.) and Jason Webb (Philadelphia, Pa.) were both named first alternates to the United States World University Games Team. Finch finished sixth in the 200-meter butterfly and Webb was seventh in the 200-meter backstroke at the national championships.
