Cavaliers Ready to Begin New Season

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia swimming teams begin their 1997-1998 schedule on Saturday, (Nov. 1) at 1:00 p.m. The Cavaliers will travel to Clemson to participate in their opening meet of the season.

The Virginia women's team finished last season with a record of 8-2 overall, 4-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cavaliers welcome back All-Americans Rebecca Cronk, Julie Gehm, Emily Trakas, Meghan McCubbins, Emily Carrig and Sharon Reidlinger.

The Virginia men's team finished last season with a record of 5-6 overall, 2-3 in the conference. The Cavaliers return All-Americans Doak Finch, Douglas Gallagher, Shamek Pietucha, Austin Ramirez and Jason Webb.

Clemson comes into the meet looking to build upon a successful 1996-1997 season, when the women's team finished with a record of 7-2 overall, 2-1 in the ACC, and the men's team finished at 5-5 overall, 1-3 in the conference.

Mark Bernardino enters his 20th season as head coach of Virginia swimming. Under Bernardino, the women's team has an overall record of 136-56-1, and the men's team has complied a record of 120-75-0.

Virginia's next meet will be on November 9 when the Cavaliers host the University of Pittsburgh at the Aquatic and Fitness Center starting at 12:00 noon.
