Of Note • Joined the team in January of 2011 • Ranks fourth in the 100 freestyle and seventh in the 50 freestyle on Virginia's all-time top times list
2011-12 • Earned All-America honors with the 800 free relay that finished fourth at NCAAs • Also took home All-America Honorable Mention honors in the 400 free relay and 400 medley relay • Touched second in the 200 free in a career-best 1:36.20 to earn All-Conference honors at ACCs • Part of the 800 free relay that won the ACC title and broke the Christiansburg Aquatic Center record • Also placed eighth in the 100 free and 13th in the 50 free at the conference meet • Set a career-best 20.04 in the 50 free as a leadoff at the Georgia Fall Invite • His 100 free of 43.70 that led off the 400 free relay at NCAAs was a season-best • Picked up two wins in the 100 free against Pitt and Virginia Tech
2010-11 • Swam on three All-America relay teams for Virginia at his first NCAA Championships • Member of the 400 freestyle relay (sixth) and 200 freestyle relay (eighth) teams that earned All-America accolades • Also anchored the 200 medley relay team that placed 15th and received honorable mention All-America honors at NCAAs • Finaled in the 100 freestyle at the ACC Championships, finishing seventh in 43.79 • Placed 13th in the 50 freestyle at the conference meet, clocking a time of 20.22 • Both his prelim times in the 50 freestyle (20.11) and 100 freestyle (43.58) were faster • Swam as a member of Virginia's ACC championship 400 freestyle relay team that set a conference and meet record, finishing in 2:51.26 • Also part of the second-place 200 freestyle relay team and anchored the third-place 200 medley relay team at ACCs
High School • Holds the Australian age record (age 16) in the 50-meter freestyle • Represented Australia at the Youth Commonwealth Games and in a Trans Tasman series vs. New Zealand • Made the Youth Olympic Team but did not compete because of illness • Served as a team captain at Iona College • Two-time recipient of the bronze level academic award • Also competed in volleyball, water polo, rugby and athletics
Personal • Son of John and Anne Barrett • Has an older sister, Clair, and an older brother Samuel • Both siblings were swimmers on the Australian Youth Team • Plans to major in foreign affairs
