CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams won 13 of 20 events against Virginia Tech on the first day of a two-day meet Friday evening (Jan. 13) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville.
After one day of action, the No. 4 Cavalier women lead the Hokies, 130-56, while the No. 15 Virginia men lead Virginia Tech, 102-84.
Freshman Sydney Dusel (Naperville, Ill.) broke the school record in the women’s 1-meter event, winning with a score of 319.73. Sophomore Kylie Towbin (New Canaan, Conn.) placed second in the women’s 3-meter event with 333.90 points, while on the men’s side, freshman Bryce Shelton (Vienna, Va.) finished second on 3-meter (385.50) and third on 1-meter (356.93).
“Great job by our divers today,” UVA head diving coach Jason Glorius said. “They all competed well and cranked out some nice scores. We need to build on this meet moving forward.”
Senior Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) broke the AFC pool record in the women’s 500-yard freestyle in 4:37.42.
The Cavaliers swept four events, including wins in the men’s 500 free by sophomore Sam Magnan (Bethlehem, Pa.), the women’s 100 breaststroke by senior Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany), the women’s 100 free by freshman Morgan Hill (Olney, Md.) and the men’s 200 butterfly by sophomore Zach Fong (Moorestown, N.J.).
Virginia won three of the four relays contested, including the women’s 200 medley relay, women’s 400 medley relay and men’s 400 medley relay.
Other Cavaliers to pick up wins were senior Matt Lockman (Charlottesville, Va.) in the men’s 100 free, senior Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.) in the women’s 200 IM, junior Jennifer Marrkand (Westport, Mass.) in the women’s 200 backstroke and redshirt sophomore Brendan Casey (Santa Monica, Calif.) in the men’s 200 back.
The two-day meet signifies the men's and women’s swimming and diving matchups between Virginia and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash, sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of University of Virginia Athletics. There are two points at stake in the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash, the point rivalry series between UVA and Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech currently leads the 2016-17 Commonwealth Clash, 3.5-2.5. The swimming action continues Saturday at noon. Before the competition starts, the Cavaliers will honor their senior class in a ceremony that will begin at 11:40 a.m.
