GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 23 Virginia men’s swim team concluded the second day of competition at the 2018 ACC Championships on Thursday (Feb. 22) at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C., with senior Zach Fong (Moorestown, N.J.) recording the school's second-fastest performance in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:44.30. Fong tied for ninth overall in the event and tied for first place in the B-Final.
After the second day of competition, Virginia ranks seventh in the team standings with 289.5 points. NC State leads the field with 524 points, followed by Florida State in second place with 460.5 points, Louisville in third place with 441 points, Virginia Tech in fourth place with 426.5 points, Notre Dame in fifth place with 393.5 points and Duke in sixth place with 368 points.
“Great second day for the guys,” head coach Todd DeSorbo said. “We had 12 swims today and all 12 swam a lifetime best. We were really led by our distance crew, putting two up in the A-Final. Freshman Robby Giller (Wilton, Conn.) and junior Sam Magnan (Bethlehem, Pa.) recorded back-to-back finishes in the 500-yard freestyle. Giller placed fourth in the event with a time of 4:15.70, fifth-fastest performance in UVA history, while Magnan placed fifth with a time of 4:15.71. Magnan’s preliminary time of 4:15.64 ranks fourth in school history.
Junior Bryce Keblish (Fairfield, Conn.) finished eighth in 200-yard individual medley a time of 1:46.28. His preliminary time of 1:45.04 ranks ninth in school history.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Ryan Baker (Arlington, Va.), senior Luke Georgiadis (Jacksonville, Fla.), sophomore Joe Clark (Worcester Park, Great Britain) and Keblish, respectively, tied for sixth with a season-best time of 1:18.46.
In the B-Finals of the 50-yard freestyle, Baker finished 15th with a time of 19.90. In the morning’s preliminary race, he captured a time of 19.76 for the sixth-fastest performance in UVA history.
Clark’s time of 19.89 in the C-Finals of the 50-yard freestyle ranks eighth in program history. He finished 20th overall.
The Cavaliers will compete in tomorrow’s preliminary races beginning at 10 a.m. and final events beginning at 6 p.m. In addition to the ACC Championships, members of both the men’s and women’s swim teams will participate in the ECAC Championships at the Rutgers’ Sonny Werblin Recreation Center in Piscataway, N.J.
