Members of the Virginia men’s and women’s swim teams finished the second day of competition at the ECAC Championships on Saturday (Feb. 24) at Rutgers' Sonny Werblin Recreation Center.

“We had a great second night at the ECAC Championships with the group up there,” head coach Todd DeSorbo said. “The athletes up there are having a lot of lifetime best. Caroline Gmelich had a great double today with a 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke double, posting a personal lifetime best in both events and dipping under 54 seconds for the first time in her career in the 100 butterfly. The rest of the gang is doing well up there as well. We are excited for their results and looking forward to seeing what they do on the last day.”

Junior Mary Pelton (Townson, Md.) paced the team, finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle with a career best time of 1:48.08.

Freshman Caroline Gmelich (Rumson, N.J.) recorded two second-place finishes during the day, recording a time of 53.70 in the 100-yard butterfly and a time of 53.89 in the 100-yard backstroke. Both career best performances earned NCAA B Standard marks.

In the men’s 100-yard butterfly, junior Brandon Goldstein (Gaithersburg, Md.) finished second with a time of 48.26. He recorded an NCAA B Standard time of 48.06 during the morning’s preliminary swim. Sophomore Henry Keel (Memphis, Tenn.) finished 10th in the event with a time of 50.12.

Sophomore Jason Quinn (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) captured a third-place finish in the men’s 400-yard individual medley. He recorded a time of 3:53.76 for an NCAA B Standard time.

Senior Jessie Gvozdas (Henrico, Va.) finished fifth in the 400-yard individual medley, capturing time of 4:29.37.

The Cavaliers rounded out the day with junior Anna Dickinson (Virginia Beach, Va.) finishing sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.18 and junior Peyton Baldwin (Newport News, Va.) finishing seventh in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.48.

The women’s team is in seventh place with 146 points, while the men’s team is in 10th place with 89 points.

Members of the Cavaliers men’s and women’s swim teams will conclude the ECAC Championships tomorrow at Rutger’s Sonny Werblin Recreation Center. The preliminary races will begin at 9 a.m. followed by the finals at 4 p.m.
