ATLANTA - The No. 14 Virginia men's swimming and diving team got a season-best performance in the 800-yard freestyle relay on Monday as the Cavaliers opened the ACC Championships at Georgia Tech.
The Cavalier quartet of freshman Joe Clark (Worcester Park, Great Britain), senior Austin Quinn (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), freshman John Whiteside (Fairfield, Conn.) and junior Luke Georgiadis (Jacksonville, Fla.) turned in a time of 6:20.98 to finish fifth.
The finish trimmed almost three seconds off the previous season-best for a Virginia 800-freestyle relay team set at the UGA Fall Invite hosted by Georgia.
Virginia is in 10th place after the first day of competition with 94 points. The first-day totals include the scores from the two relays and the three-meter diving. Diving events were held two weeks ago at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center.
After three events in the men's competition, Virginia Tech leads with 163 points, followed by Duke with 147, Florida State with 146, Notre Dame with 138 and NC State with 130 points to round out the top five.
The Cavaliers opened the 2017 ACC Championships on Monday with the 200-yard medley relay. The unit of Clark, sophomore Alex Albracht (Mission Hills, Kan.), sophomore Bryce Keblish (Fairfield, Conn.) and senior Matt Lockman (Charlottesville, Va.) finishing eighth with a time of 1:25.94.
Virginia will return to action with day two of the ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Tuesday (Feb. 28) at 10 a.m., swimming in the prelims of the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM and 50-yard freestyle. The finals for all three events, in addition to the 200 freestyle relay, will begin at 6 p.m.
