Shelton and Towbin Advance to NCAAs in Platform Diving

Christiansburg, Va. - Virginia freshman Bryce Shelton (Vienna, Va.) made it a clean sweep at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, qualifying for the national championships in platform diving on Tuesday. He previously qualified for the NCAA Championships on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

Shelton finished fourth in the men’s platform competition with 641.65 points to earn one of the automatic berths from the site. Teammate Samson Miller also reached the finals where he placed 16th with 519.25 points.

In the women’s platform competition, sophomore Kylie Towbin (New Canaan, Conn.) was the runner-up with 482.85 points to secure a spot at the national championships. Junior Corey Johnson (Ambler, Pa.) placed eight in the finals at 415.60 and freshman Sydney Dusel (Naperville, Ill.) was 10th at 408.40.

Dusel will join Towbin at the nationals after earning a berth in the 3-meter board competition. It marks the second consecutive year the Cavaliers will send a total of three divers to the national championships.

“I'm really proud of the divers and how they competed these last few days,” said Virginia diving coach Jason Glorius. “Bryce did an excellent job qualifying in all three events and putting together some solid lists. Samson had a great three-meter event and was solid on platform.

“The women also did very well. Kylie and Sydney punched their tickets and have a shot at scoring us some points at NCAAs. Corey came about as close as you can to making the meet while just falling a bit short. I know she'll get back to work. Kirsten did some great things as well. She had an excellent platform event and she competed the most difficult dive in the women's one-meter event. I'm happy some of us are moving on and will have an opportunity to compete in Indianapolis, earn All-American status and help us accomplish our team goals.”



The women’s 1-meter diving trials take place Thursday, March 16 at 12:30 p.m. with finals taking place that evening. The women’s 3-meter diving prelims are Friday, March 17 at 12:30 p.m. with finals that evening. Platform trials start at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 18 with finals that evening.

The men’s 1-meter diving trials take place Thursday, March 23 at 12:15 p.m. with finals taking place that evening. The men’s 3-meter diving prelims are Friday, March 24 at 12:15 p.m. with finals that evening. Platform trials start at noon on Saturday, March 25 with finals that evening.
