INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Virginia opened the 2017 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships by competing in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The opening day produced a personal best swim from the relay's leadoff swimmer, Austin Quinn (Chagrin Fall, Ohio), who clocked a time of 1:35.01.

Quinn's time places him seventh in program history, tying Tom Barrett's effort from 2003.

The Cavaliers recorded a time of 6:21.45 as Quinn, John Whiteside (Fairfield, Conn.), Joe Clark (Worcester Park, Great Britain) and Luke Georgiadis (Bel Air, Md.), respectively, took fifth in their heat and 19th overall for the event.

The NCAA Championships continues Thursday with the 200-yard freestyle relay, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, 400-yard medley relay and the 1-meter diving. The prelims will begin at 10 a.m., with finals starting at 6 p.m.
