AUSTIN, Texas—Virginia junior JB Kolod made school history on the second day of the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, becoming the first Cavalier diver to qualify for a championship final at the national meet, Friday (March 28) at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Kolod (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who finished seventh in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 376.85, also became the first Cavalier diver to earn multiple All-America citations. Kolod earned honorable mention All-America honors at last year’s NCAA meet, placing 12th on 3-meter boards. Kolod scored 382.95 in the prelims to qualify for the finals.
“I was very happy to make the championship final after my first dive didn’t go well,” Kolod said. “I knew I had to be on point after missing the first dive and it was very difficult, but I’m ecstatic to be an All-American.”
Virginia has 12 points after two days and sits in 27th place.
Sophomore Yannick Kaeser (Mumpf, Switzerland) placed just outside the scoring positions in the 100 breast, finishing 17th in 53.10.
In the 200 medley relay, the team of senior Jack Murfee (Nashville, Tenn.), Kaeser, Ingraham and junior Jake Pearce (Tulsa, Okla.) placed 22nd in a time of 1:26.74, the fifth-fastest time in school history.
The 800 free relay of Phillips, Papendick, Ingraham and senior Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) placed 26th in a time of 6:30.92.
Senior Nathan Hart (Asheville, N.C.) finished 40th in the 100 fly in 47.86.
The meet concludes Saturday (March 29) with the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, platform diving and 400 free relay events being contested. Prelims begin at noon and the finals are scheduled for an 8 p.m. start. Times are Eastern.
