BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—The Virginia swimming and diving team completed action on the first day of a tri-meet against Indiana and Penn State Friday evening (Nov. 16) at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind.
Going into the second day on Saturday (Nov. 17), the No. 10 UVa women lead No. 14 Indiana, 114-53, and have a 101-65 advantage over Penn State. The No. 8 Cavalier men lead No. 24 Penn State, 94-73, but trail No. 7 Indiana, 84-83.
The Cavalier women started off the meet with a win in the 200 free relay, as juniors Rachel Naurath and Emily Lloyd, freshman Rachel Moore and senior Lauren Perdue finished first in a time of 1:31.45, the top time in the ACC this year.
Naurath won the women’s 500 free in an NCAA ‘B’ time of 4:43.83, before notching a win in the 200 fly in 1:58.77. Sophomores Shaun Casey (1:59.50) and Alison Haulsee (2:00.26) placed second and third to give UVa a 1-2-3 sweep in the event.
Perdue touched first in the 100 free in 48.91, the best mark in the ACC this season and the second-best time in the nation, while freshman Courtney Bartholomew captured the 200 back in 1:55.33, seventh on the UVa all-time top 10 list.
Sophomore Ellen Williamson posted a UVa season-best time in the 200 IM (2:01.13 – second place).
Cavalier men who posted Virginia season-best marks included senior Nick Montes de Oca in the 200 IM (1:50.23 – third place), freshman Yannick Kaeser in the 100 breast (56.10 – second place) and sophomore David Ingraham in the 200 fly (1:48.82 – second place).
Junior Brad Phillips posted the top time in the ACC and an NCAA ‘B’ mark in the 500 free (4:24.73 – second place), while freshman Luke Papendick earned the same feats in the 200 back (1:45.98 – second place).
The action continues Saturday at 11 a.m. with the 200 medley relay, 1000 free, 50 free, 100 back, 200 breast, 100 fly, 200 free, 400 IM, 400 free relay, women's 3m and men's 1m diving.
