Women's Swimming Competes in Sun Devil Classic
TEMPE, Ariz.- The University of Virginia women's swimming team competed in the Sun Devil Classic, held at Arizona State University this weekend. In the Sun Devil Classic I, which took place all day Friday and Saturday morning, the Cavaliers finished in third place with a total score of 739.5 points. Virginia then placed fourth in the Sun Devil Classic II, which was held Saturday afternoon, with 208 points. Arizona State won the Sun Devil Classic I, while Purdue claimed first place in the Sun Devil Classic II.
In the Sun Devil Classic I, sophomore Lindsey Schubert (Greenwich, Conn.) was a double winner for the Cavaliers. Schubert captured first place in the 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 1:06.80, while also winning the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.12. Five other Virginia swimmers earned runner-up finishes. Sophomore Meghan McCubbins (Richmond, Va.) was second in the 50 yard freestyle (24.14), junior Valarie Zammitti (Paramus, N.J.) finished second in the 100 yard butterfly (58.09), freshman Laramie Hill (Clifton, Va.) placed second in the three meter diving (449.1), senior Maureen Burnham (Sarasota, Fla.) was second in the 200 yard backstroke (2:06.16) and sophomore Emily Carrig (Richmond, Va.) placed second in the 1,650 yard freestyle (16:48.00).
In the Sun Devil Classic II, four Cavaliers earned individual event titles. Sophomore Emily Trakas (Herndon, Va.) won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.37, Carrig captured the 200 yard butterfly title in a time of 2:06.94, sophomore Kori Forster (New Orleans, La.) finished first in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 58.09 and Schubert won the 400 yard individual medley in a time of 4:36.04. In addition, McCubbins was the runner-up in the 100 yard backstroke (1:00.76) and Burnham finished second in the 200 yard backstroke (2:05.58)
The Cavalier swimming teams will be back in action from Dec. 4-6, when the UVa Invitational will be held at the Aquatic & Fitness Center.
