Virginia Diving Teams Continue Strong Showing at Georgia Invitational

Caratelli and Smith Reach Finals on Three Meter Board

ATHENS, Ga. - Sophomore Katie Caratelli (Westlake, Ohio) placed fifth on the three meter springboard and freshman Ashley Smith (Charlottesville, Va.) finished in seventh place, as the University of Virginia men's and women's diving teams took part in day two of the Georgia Diving Invitational. Caratelli had a score of 440.45 in the finals, while Smith totaled 409.05. Christy Soulakis of Kentucky won the event with a total of 482.65.Virginia and Kentucky were the only schools to have more than one diver in the finals.

In the preliminary round, Caratelli was seventh with a score of 402.40, while Smith was eighth with a total of 394.45. Among the other Cavaliers taking part in the preliminary competition, senior Jennifer Stewart (Baltimore, Md.) finished 13th with a total of 377.45, freshman Laramie Hill (Clifton, Va.) placed 16th with a score of 365.55, and freshman Courtney Colbert (Brown Deer, Wis.) was 22nd with a total of 349.90.

In the men's one meter springboard competition, freshman Andy Cunningham (Louisville, Ky.) just missed qualifying for finals, placing ninth in the preliminary round with a score of 392.40. Jud Campbell of Georgia won the event with a total of 521.45 in the finals.

The Georgia Diving Invitational will conclude tomorrow, Jan. 5.
