CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The nationally-ranked Virginia swimming and diving teams face off with in-state rival Virginia Tech in their final home meet of the season Friday and Saturday (Jan. 13-14) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville.
Diving action begins Friday at 2 p.m., while swimming will commence at 5 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday. Before Saturday’s action, the Cavaliers will honor their senior class in a ceremony starting at 11:40 a.m.
Admission to all Virginia home meets at the AFC is free. Public parking is available at Slaughter Recreation Center and the parking lot closest to the West Gate at Scott Stadium on a first-come, first-served basis.
The meet will also signify the men's and women’s swimming and diving matchups between Virginia and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash, sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of University of Virginia Athletics. There are two points at stake in the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash, the point rivalry series between UVA and Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech currently leads the 2016-17 Commonwealth Clash, 3.5-2.5. Saturday will also be a CavMan’s Crew day at the AFC and a balloon artist will be located in the lobby of the AFC from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Virginia’s women are currently ranked No. 4 in the CSCAA national rankings, while the Cavalier men are No. 15.
Last time the Cavaliers competed as a full team, the UVA women finished third and the men fourth at the Georgia Fall Invitational in December. Senior Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.) broke four school records at the meet, including the 100- and 200-yard butterfly and the 200 and 400 IM.
The Hokie men come in to the meet undefeated at 6-0, while the women are 4-2. Both Virginia Tech teams were leading Georgia Tech, but trailing Kentucky when the second day of their meet was cancelled due to snow last Saturday.
Last season, the Cavalier women (258-95) and Hokie men (212.5-140.5) were victorious.
Next weekend, the Cavaliers travel to Duke (Jan. 20) and North Carolina (Jan. 21).
