CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Virginia head swimming and diving coach Augie Busch announced Wednesday (Jan. 15) that Kerry Smith has been hired as an assistant coach.

“We are very excited to have Kerry join our staff here at UVa,” Busch said. “She is a positive-natured, energetic, enthusiastic person who has an inherent ability to see potential before seeing limitations. She showed tremendous dedication to maximize her swimming in college and professionally she has left an indelible mark wherever she has been. She loves coaching and is all about helping take this program to the highest echelon of college swimming. We cannot wait to work with her on a daily basis.”

Smith joins Busch’s staff at Virginia, which includes head diving coach Jason Glorius and assistant coaches Sam Busch, Cory Chitwood and Clif Robbins.

Smith comes to Charlottesville after spending the last year and a half as an assistant coach at Wingate University. At last year’s NCAA Division II Championships, Smith helped guide Wingate’s women to a fifth-place finish, while the men placed sixth. The Bulldog women broke all but three school records during the time Smith was on staff.

Before Wingate, Smith was an assistant at Truman State University, where she mentored seven student-athletes to the 2012 NCAA DII Championships.

Before Truman State, Smith spent one year as the head women’s swimming coach at the Acadmey of Notre Dame de Namur in Villanova, Pa., and five years as an assistant with the Upper Main Line YMCA club program in Berwyn, Pa.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to work with the student-athletes at the University of Virginia,” Smith said. “The history, tradition and academic excellence of Virginia is unmatched. I look forward to working with Augie, Clif, Sam, Cory and Jason over the next years as we continue and build the great tradition that is Virginia swimming and diving.”

Smith graduated from Penn State in 2005 with degrees in both marketing and advertising/public relations. Smith was a team captain for the Nittany Lions her senior year and helped lead PSU to Big Ten Championships in 2002 and 2005. She earned the Nittany Lion women’s squad’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in 2005.
