CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Nine members of the Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs will compete at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships Friday through Sunday (March 15-17) at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg, Va. Action begins at noon each day.
Over 85 divers from 30 schools will be participating. Live results will be available and linked through VirginiaSports.com.
Juniors Kelly Lloyd and Carlin Tettelbach, sophomore Laura Gartrell and freshmen Becca Corbett and Katie Warburg will compete on the women’s 1-meter boards on Friday, 3-meter boards on Saturday and the platform event on Sunday.
Sophomore JB Kolod and freshmen Carl Buergler, Jordan Sacks and Colby Shinholser will be on the men’s 3-meter boards on Friday, move to the 1-meter boards on Saturday and will also compete in the platform event on Sunday.
The group of nine divers is the most Virginia has ever had qualify for the Zone Championships. Corbett (1-meter and platform) and Warburg (3-meter) have broken school records in their first year on Grounds, while Kolod earned All-ACC honors with a third-place finish on the 3-meter boards and has broken the 1- and 3-meter school records this season.
“It’s pretty awesome that all nine divers qualified for this meet,” UVa diving coach Rich MacDonald said. “It’s been a major team goal since the start of the season. We have the chance to do something exciting this weekend.
“They’ve all worked hard all year in preparation for this meet and I believe we’re ready. We have some lofty individual and team goals that we still want to accomplish and I’m looking forward to watching them compete towards those goals.”
The 1- and 3-meter events will consist of a preliminary round of six dives and the top 18 will advance to the finals for a list of six more dives. In the platform events, the men’s prelim will have six dives, while the women’s prelim will have five dives. The top 12 will advance to finals and perform a second list of dives (six for the men, five for the women).
Six women and five men from Zone A will move on to the NCAA Championships, which start next week with the women’s meet March 21-23, while the men’s meet will be contested March 28-30. Both national meets will be held in Indianapolis, Ind.
