INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The 14th-ranked Virginia men's swim team begins its competition at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. The meet will run for four days, concluding on Saturday.

The Cavaliers will send five swimmers to the national meet with senior Austin Quinn (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), sophomore Zach Fong (Moorestown, N.J.) and freshmen Joe Clark (Worcester Park, Great Britain), Ted Schubert (Ashland, Va.) and John Whiteside (Fairfield, Conn.) representing the program on the national stage. Freshman, Bryce Shelton (Vienna, Va.) will represent UVA in the diving competition.

Virginia will also compete in four of the five relay events.

Fong is making his second appearance at the NCAA Championships after competing in the 2016 NCAA Championships in the 200-yard butterfly. Fong qualified for the 200 fly again as a sophomore this season.

The other four Cavaliers will all be making their NCAA Championships debuts.

Schubert qualified for the 200-yard butterfly along with Fong, while Clark qualified for the 100-yard backstroke and Whiteside qualified for the 100-yard freestyle. Quinn qualified for the 400-yard individual medley.

Clark set the school record in the backstroke, taking the silver medal at the ACC Championships with a time of 45.63, while Whiteside took a silver medal in the 100-yard freestyle and turned in the program's second-fastest time when he swam the opening leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 42.76.

A total of 270 participants (235 swimmers and 35 divers) will compete in the championships. Swimmers qualified for the championships by meeting the established minimum time for the events in which they entered.
