CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams presented their end-of-the-year awards for 2012-13 recently at the UVa swimming and diving annual banquet.
Senior Tom Barrett and freshman Courtney Bartholomew were named the men’s and women’s Most Valuable Player awards, while senior Lauren Perdue, junior Taylor Grey and JB Kolod were honored with the Coaches’ Award for their dedication, attitude, commitment and performance that was instrumental to the team’s success.
Bartholomew and fellow freshman Luke Papendick were awarded Freshman of the Year honors as well as Performance of the Year honors in the backstroke at the NCAA Championships. Bartholomew won the consolation final in the 100 back in 51.63, the second-fastest time in school history, while Papendick won the consolation final in the 200 back in a school-record time of 1:41.50.
Kolod also picked up the David Fafara Diving Award of Excellence after breaking the 1- and 3-meter school records and posting the highest NCAA diving finish in school history (12th-place on 3-meter).
Junior Jack Murfee and sophomore Alison Haulsee were given the Academic Awards for their work in the classroom, while Murfee and senior Meg Hutchinsonwere honored as the Lifters of the Year for their work in the weight room.
The Peggy and Terry McCarty H.E.A.R.T. of the Team Award was given to sophomore Sarah White. The honor is presented to the team member who best exemplifies the characteristics that create team cohesion as a family away from home – humor, enthusiasm, ability, readiness and trustworthiness.
The Ramirez Family Leadership Award was presented to junior Jonathan Buerger for his superior leadership ability, high ethics, excellence in the classroom and pre-eminence in the University community.
The Gus and Becky Ramirez Swimming and Diving Scholarship are given to two underclassmen annually who show commitment, achievement and a positive approach to the Virginia swimming and diving family. This year’s recipients are Haulsee and Papendick.
The Cavaliers also honored their seniors with Jefferson Cups. Both Cavalier squads won their sixth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Championships.
