BARCELONA, Spain—Former Virginia swimming standout Matt McLean won gold as part of the U.S. men’s 4x200-meter freestyle relay Friday (Aug. 2) at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.

McLean swam as the leadoff of the American relay that posted the fastest time in prelims Friday morning in 7:08.05. McLean led off in a time of 1:47.63 and was followed by Michael Klueh, Charlie Houchin and Ricky Berens.

In the evening finals, the relay of Conor Dwyer, Ryan Lochte, Houchin and Berens won in a time of 7:01.72, ahead of Russia (7:03.92) and China (7:04.74) to claim the gold.

This is McLean’s fifth international gold medal. McLean also earned gold in the 4x200m free relay at the 2012 London Olympics and the 2012 FINA Short Course World Championships. At the 2011 World University Games, McLean won two gold medals - in the 200m free and the 4x200m free relay.

Also on Friday, former UVa swimmer Katya Bachrouche (Class of 2011) represented Lebanon and placed 24th in the women’s 800m free in 8:50.08. Bachrouche competed for Lebanon at the 2012 London Olympics and won gold in the 200m free, 400m free, 800m free and 200-meter individual medley at the 2011 Pan Arab Games.
