Oct. 26, 2006

CHARLOTTESVILLE -

  • Coach Bernardino Previews the Season

The Virginia men's and women's swimming teams will open the 2006-07 season this weekend as they host a quad meet at the Aquatic and Fitness Center Friday and Saturday. The Cavaliers will host Clemson, Penn State and Virginia Tech. The meet begins with diving at 1 p.m. Friday, followed by a swimming session at 6 p.m. The swimming will conclude on Saturday, with the session beginning at 9 a.m.

The Cavaliers are led by 29th year head coach Mark Bernardino. The Virginia men's team is the eight-time defending ACC Champions, while the women's team finished ACC runner-up for the second consecutive season after capturing the 2003 and 2004 titles.

The meet will also serve as the Commonwealth Challenge swimming event. Both the men's and women's meet with Virginia Tech will be worth one point in the all-sports competition between the Cavaliers and Hokies. Currently, Virginia leads this year's challenge by a 2.5-0.5 score.

Admission to the meet is free. Live updates will also be available at http://virginiasports.cstv.com/livestats/c-swim/index.htm
