Virginia Finishes First Day of Hokie Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va.-The Virginia men's and women's track and field teams finished the first day of competition Friday (Jan. 20) at the Hokie Invitational. The ‘Hoos picked up six top-three finishes at Rector Fieldhouse.

"It was your typical first meet after a long break," Cavalier director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. "We had some good performances and we had some that we can improve upon, but the important thing is that our athletes know where they can improve from here."

Junior Lance Roller (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) crossed the line second in the men's 600-meter run in 1:18.50, while freshman Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.) placed seventh in 1:20.47.

In the women's weight throw, senior Maureen Laffan (Toms River, N.J.) finished second with a mark of 17.86m (58'7.25") and classmate Erin Wykoff (St. Jacob, Ill.) placed fifth at 16.68m (54'8.0").

Senior All-American Marcus Robinson (Richmond, Va.) earned second in the men's triple jump with a leap of 15.46m (50'8.75"), while freshman Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) hit a mark of 14.54m (47'8.50"), good enough for sixth.

Senior Kevin Anding (Houston, Texas) placed second in the men's 300-meter dash in 34.48 and sophomore Ozzie Bryan (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished fourth in 35.30. Freshman Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) earned third in the women's 300m in 39.05.

In the men's weight throw, senior Vincenzo Chiariello (Staten Island, N.Y.) finished third with a mark of 18.45m (60'6.5"), while sophomore James Fuson (Glen Allen, Va.) placed ninth with a throw of 16.90m (55'5.5").

In the women's 60-meter hurdles, freshman Shantell Bingham (Alexandria, Va.) finished sixth in a time of 8.82, the ninth-fastest time in school history.

Junior Dallas Rose (Pearland, Texas) placed sixth in the women's triple jump with a leap of 12.28m (40'3.5").

The action continues Saturday (Jan. 21) at 11 a.m., at Rector Fieldhouse.
