BLACKSBURG, Va.—The Virginia women’s track and field team opened the 2016 indoor season on the first day of the Virginia Tech Invitational Friday (Jan. 15) at Rector Field House in Blacksburg.

"There is always a lot of learning after the first competition of the year and this one was no exception," UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. "One can walk away one of two ways, either you are right where you want to be or you have a lot of work to do to be where you want to be. It can be a wake up call or a confidence booster.

"I look forward to having the entire team compete next week at Kentucky. It will be a much better indicator of where we are."

In her collegiate debut, redshirt freshman Kate Kaufman (Chattanooga, Tenn.) won the women’s unseeded pole vault with a mark of 3.52m (11’ 6.5”), which ranks eighth on UVA’s all-time list and tied for third on the Cavaliers’ all-time freshman list.

Junior Caroline Clark (Washington, D.C.) crossed the line second in the mile in 5:01.66, while freshman Bonnie Angermeier (Blacksburg, Va.) was fourth in 5:03.60.

Junior Heather Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.77. Fellow junior Chimere Ezumah (Gardena, Calif.) was sixth in the 500 meters in 1:15.58.

In the 1,000 meters, freshman Alexia Roux (Le Mont-sur-Lausanne, Switzerland) finished ninth in 2:56.80, fourth on UVA’s all-time freshman list.

Senior Peyton Chaney (Belleville, Ill.) and junior Andrea Wright (Chesapeake, Va.) placed seventh and eighth in the 300 meters in times of 39.76 and 39.89, respectively. Chaney also placed ninth in the 60 meters in 7.64.

The meet concludes Saturday (Jan. 16) with action set to begin at 11 a.m.
