NOTRE DAME, Ind.—The Virginia women’s track and field team posted four top-3 finishes at the Notre Dame Invitational Saturday (Jan. 21) at the Loftus Sports Center in Notre Dame, Ind.
“I am very pleased with our newcomers overall,” UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “We have some young ladies that have really stepped up and lead by example. It has allowed the younger ones to adjust to the higher level of competition and a new team environment. We have still have a ways to go to reach the summit, but now we can see it."
Redshirt sophomore Mia Barron (Minnetonka, Minn.) won the triple jump with a leap of 12.69m (41’ 7.75”), moving her up to sixth on UVA’s all-time list. Sophomore Kelly McKee (Lenexa, Kan.) was the runner-up with a mark of 12.44m (40’ 10”), ninth on the same list.
Freshman Alexis Woodley (Chesapeake, Va.) was the runner-up in the 60m hurdles in 8.59, which is a Cavalier freshman record and fifth on the school’s all-time list. Senior Heather Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) was fifth in 8.69.
“Alexis is so young in our sport,” Fetzer said. “She will continue to progress as her technique improves. As long as she stays diligent, focusing on the technical aspect, the sky is the limit.”
Senior Chimere Ezumah (Gardena, Calif.) placed third in the 400 meters in 56.23 and fifth in the 200 meters in 25.20. In the high jump, sophomore Carly Feyerabend (Mechanicsville, Va.) finished in a tie for third, clearing a height of 1.64m (5’ 4.75”).
Freshman Emma Call (Richmond, Va.) placed fifth in the 800 meters in 2:11.71, which ranks fifth on UVA’s freshman list.
The 4x400m relay of freshman Anna Jefferson (Warren, Mich.), Smith, Woodley and Sullivan placed fifth in 3:48.98.
“Having the opportunity to compete and experience the facility, hotel, etc. where the ACC Indoor Championships will be held adds to the student-athletes' level of confidence and familiarity when we come back in late February," Fetzer said. “We use the first three meets of the indoor season as preparation for later in the season and stagger when individuals open up their first competition. Next week at Liberty, we will have another wave start the season so when we make the trip to Boston we will be at full strength.”
The Cavaliers return to action next Saturday (Jan. 28) for the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational in Lynchburg, Va.
