LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Virginia women’s track and field team opened action at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet Friday (Jan. 22) at the Nutter Field House in Lexington, Ky.

The women’s distance medley relay of graduate student Iona Lake (Norwich, England), junior Chimere Ezumah (Gardena, Calif.), sophomore Caroline Clark (Washington, D.C.) and graduate student Sarah Astin (Isle of Man, Great Britain) placed second in 11:23.06.

“It was a solid opening run for the women and an overall positive effort,” Virginia director of track of field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “Iona ran a great lead-off leg tonight. She is so fit right now. It is exciting to see what can transpire over the course of the season.”

Freshman Alana Herran (Orange, N.J.) placed third in the pentathlon with a final score of 3,191 points, third on UVA’s all-time freshman list. Fellow freshman Carly Feyerabend (Mechanicsville, Va.) finished fourth with 3,057 points.

“It was a last minute decision for the combined-event women to compete in the pentathlon, but they handled it well,” Fetzer said. “The statement you will hear a lot is that it was a great teaching opportunity and this applies to them.”

In the pole vault, sophomore Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) placed fifth with a height of 4.07m (13’ 4.25”), while redshirt freshman Kate Kaufman (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished 13th with a mark of 3.52m (11’ 6.5”).

“Bridget had a good look at 13'8",” Fetzer said. “The more opportunities she has to see those heights, the more comfortable she will become. She has started the year off on a huge note and it is just the beginning.”

In the 600-yard run, junior Micah Brickhill (Buckingham, Va.) finished sixth in 1:25.96, while sophomore Holly Sullivan (Chester Springs, Pa.) eighth in 1:27.67.

The action continues Saturday (Jan. 23) with field events starting at 11 a.m. and track events slated for a noon start.
