LEXINGTON, Ky.—Virginia freshman thrower Hilmar Jonsson won the weight throw as the Virginia men’s track and field team opened action at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet Friday (Jan. 22) at the Nutter Field House in Lexington, Ky.

Making his collegiate debut, Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) won the weight throw with a mark of 19.91m (65’ 4”). The throw broke the UVA freshman record and is second on UVA’s all-time list.

“I know he was excited to get started today,” Virginia director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “It was the first time he has ever thrown the weight in a competition, so he clearly has only scratched the surface.”

In the distance medley relay, the team of junior Mike Marsella (Hope Valley, R.I.), sophomore Logan Carrington (Leesburg, Va.), junior Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.) and senior Evan Chiplock (Saginaw, Mich.) placed fourth in 9:58.75, while the freshman foursome of Robby Keough (Atlanta, Ga.), Jake Dixon (Falmouth, Maine), Devin Barnes (Henrico, Va.) and John Pace (Chantilly, Va.) was fifth in 10:02.16.

Sophomore Kenneth Hagen (Blacksburg, Va.) placed seventh in the 600-yard run in 1:12.22.

After the first four events of the heptathlon, sophomore Jack Lint (Westerville, Ohio) is in fourth place with 2,923 points after hitting or tying personal bests in all four events. Redshirt sophomore Cam Collins (Calhoun, Ga.), senior Christian Lavorgna (Jefferson, N.J.) and junior Anthony Dunavant (Franklin, Tenn.) currently sit in sixth (2,715 points), seventh (2,615) and eighth place (2,598), respectively.

“A lot was accomplished today with the combined events and on the oval,” Fetzer said. “There were a ton of teaching opportunities. The relays are a great opportunity to race. Kentucky's track is an abnormal distance (291 meters), which I feel is a huge plus at this time of the year because it forces the student-athletes to race instead of worrying about the times due to not having a real sense of spacing.”

The action continues Saturday (Jan. 23), beginning at 10 a.m. with the heptathlon.
