LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Virginia men's track & field team had a strong first day at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet at the University of Kentucky. In a meet that features six of the nation's top 11 teams, the Cavaliers' opening day was highlighted by Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) winning the weight throw competition and strong performance in the distance medley relay.
"This meet is essentially the indoor national championship preview meet," said head coach Bryan Fetzer. "The one thing that was very impressive was how well the guys competed. Both our DMRs produced top seven times nationally, which highlights our depth. Jordan responded well today in being the hunted instead of being the hunter. He showed great maturity winning the weight throw, especially overcoming some adversity."
Young continued his strong start to the season, winning his second weight throw title in as many weeks. Young threw 69' 10.25" to finish first, just shy of his school record mark from last week.
In the final event of the day, the men's distance medley relay of Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.), Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.), Mike Marsella (Hope Valley, R.I.) and Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.) finished fourth in a time of 9:39.64, the fourth fastest time in the nation this year. The Cavaliers' "B" team of Kenneth Hagen (Blacksburg, Va.), Logan Carrington (Leesburg, Va.), Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.) and Evan Chiplock (Saginaw, Mich.) finished seventh in 9:52.63, which would rank as the seventh best time nationally.
Four Cavaliers were in action Friday with their first heptathlon competition of the year. After the first day, first-year Jack Lint (Westerville, Ohio), competing in his first collegiate multi-event competition, sits in seventh place with 2,790 points. Fellow first-year Cam Collins (Calhoun, Ga.) is in eighth with 2,618 points. Anthony Dunavant (Franklin, Tenn.) is ninth with 2,567 points and Christian Lavorgna (Jefferson, N.J.) is 11th with 2,503 points.
"It is a grueling two days of competition for all four of them, but we are confident that they will all have another good day tomorrow to close out the meet," said Fetzer.
Virginia will conclude competition at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet on Saturday. Heptathlon action begins at 10 a.m., with field events starting at 11 a.m. and track events beginning at noon. There will be live coverage of the meet on SEC Network Plus on Saturday from noon until 4:30 p.m. Cable and satellite subscribers of the SEC Network can log-on to watch SEC Network Plus events on ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN app.
